to Dr. Atkinson. It is obvious that an officer on leave cannot unexpectedly make sudden arrangements for a long voyage, without incurring unforeseen expenditure.
I may mention that in other Services, such as the Indian Medical Service, any officer ordered to return to duty before his leave has expired is granted a fresh passage and full pay from the date of his departure from Europe.
I shall be glad to receive a ruling from you as to the course to be observed both with regard to the general question and in the particular instance which I have cited.
I have the honour to be,
Sir,
Your most obedient
Humble servant,
Henry Atak[e? Artake?]
